nick_manteris's Instagram Photo - Update on Michael: First off, he is stable and has slowly been improving. Thank you for all of the support and prayers🙏🏼❤️ In order to completely kill all of your bone marrow in order to perform a transplant you go through another round of chemo that's much stronger than a normal round. That, along with the transplant itself, is very hard on your body and brings a ton of potential problems and complications.
In Michael's case, his liver and kidneys were irritated and swollen to the point that the arteries were clogging (not fully blocked). It was making him retain a painful amount of fluid, but more important is he wasn't able to breakdown all of the toxins and medicines in his body. So the meds sat in his system while more were being added through his IV, it was getting more and more potent to the point that he was more and more out of it, until he was completely non-respondent. That's why he was rushed to ICU and started on dialysis in the middle of the night. Plus, so much extra fluid was being retained that it was constricting his lungs.

Dialysis filters his blood and is doing the work for his kidneys and liver. It's also very slowly pulling the excess fluids out of him. He's being kept heavily sedated now so he can just rest and continue to heal.
Not being dramatic, it was by far the scariest few days of this entire process. Worse then being told he had cancer. We aren't out of the woods yet and still have a long way to go, but the good news now is that everything is improving. He's also engrafted which means the transplant took and he's growing new, healthy marrow.
