slavafoundation's Instagram Photo - Desert 🌵is a beautiful place, but the best part of it is oasis, that gives life to wild life 🐾 and people.
Marine protected areas (MPA) are oasis of the oceans 🌊.
A year ago 24 countries and European Union (25 #CCAMLR members) created the biggest #MPA 🐟 in the Ross Sea, #Antarctica 🇦🇶. A lot of expectations were for a new MPA to be created this year. Unfortunately no joint decision from CCAMLR members. We have only a year to work together 🤝 to create a new oasis of wild life in this pristine part of our 🌎 to save the oceans biodiversity. Will You support us to protect penguins 🐧?

greenpeacenz's Instagram Photo - In response to the failure of world leaders to agree on a proposal to protect a large area of East Antarctica, we are now launching a global campaign for an Antarctic Sanctuary covering 1.8 million square kilometres of ocean, to protect whales, penguins and other wildlife as Antarctic nations fall short on marine protection.

SHARE if you're with us!

Over the next 12 months we have an opportunity to make history: to create an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary which would be the largest protected area on Earth. Ocean sanctuaries not only protect incredible wildlife like whales and penguins, but they ensure healthy oceans which soak up carbon dioxide and help us to tackle climate change.

Together we can do it. Watch this space!

swellbound's Instagram Photo - Update on the vote for a marine protected area (MPA) in East #Antarctica, preventing #fishing and #krill fishing in particular, the staple food for #penguins and many marine animals, but is also sold as an #omega3 supplement.
This week, 24 countries are meeting at the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (#CCAMLR) to discuss MPAs. Australia and France are pushing for an MPA in East Antarctica, covering 3 of its 7 seas, crucially including a no-catch zone for krill in the D'Urville Sea-Mertz area, where last week it was found out mass starvation wiped out all chicks of a 40,000 #AdeliePenguin colony.

Unfortunately, three countries are still resisting: Russia🇷🇺, China🇨🇳, and Norway🇳🇴. Norway is home to #AkerBioMarine, a company that runs the largest krill fishery in the #Antarctic. Akermarine have claims of #ecoharvesting, and astonishingly have even acquired the @mscecolabel (#sustainablefishing) and endorsement from @wwf (AkerBioMarine is incidentally a major WWF donor💰). In a world where there are plenty of other sources of omega3, where arctic marine species are already undergoing extinction because of mass starvation, where national #scientific agencies such as the @CNRS, #oceanconservation campaigns @pewenvironment @blueplanetsociety @sumofus all ask for the end of #krillfishing, it is irresponsible and being on the wrong side of history to claim that the krill market can expand as long as it is 'managed'. For whose benefit?

Only two #Adéliepenguin chicks survived a #catastrophic breeding season for a colony of 36,000 birds after thousands starved to death, experts have said.
Unusually extensive sea ice late in the summer combined with low ice early in the season meant adult birds in the Terre Adélie colony in East #Antarctica had to travel further for food.
In the wake of the "devastating" event, conservation group #WWF is calling for the waters off #EastAntarctica to be a #marineprotectedarea to safeguard the #penguins' main food source, krill.
The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources #CCAMLR made up 25 member states and the EU, will consider a proposal for a new marine protected area for the waters off East Antarctica.
This is the second time the colony has suffered a breeding tragedy. Four years ago, no chicks survived after they froze to death when a drop in temperature followed a period of heavy #seaice, unusually warm weather and rain which had left the young saturated.
WWF say Adélie penguins, while generally faring well in East Antarctica, are declining in the Antarctic peninsula region where #climatechange is already established.
WWF has been supporting penguin research by French scientists working for the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) in the region since 2010.
Rod Downie, head of polar programmes at WWF said: "Adélie penguins are one of the hardiest and most amazing #animals on our planet.
“The risk of opening up this area to exploratory krill fisheries, which would compete with the Adélie penguins for food as they recover from two catastrophic breeding failures in four years, is unthinkable.
“So CCAMLR needs to act now by adopting a new Marine Protected Area for the waters off East Antarctica, to protect the home of the Penguins #climatechangeisreal #saveourplanet #animalwelfare 🐧

pewenvironment's Instagram Photo - A Weddell seal dives below the icy waters off East Antarctica. The Southern Ocean—the waters surrounding Antarctica—is one of the last untouched wilderness areas on the planet. But a warming climate and increased fishing pressures put this vast area and its iconic species such as penguins, whales, and seals at risk. The fate of this area rests with the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), which is meeting right now in Hobart, Tasmania until October 27. There they’ll decide on how to fulfill their promise to create a network of marine protected areas that will safeguard the world’s final ocean frontier—before it’s too late.
