ehiohiani's Instagram Photo - Dear Friends,

I have been awarded by the International Woman's Media Foundation #iwmf, the Howard G. Buffet Fund for Women Journalists for July 2017 reporting project which will last for the next one year. I lack the words to express my gratitude to the almighty God for allowing me become the 2nd Nigerian to win this grant since inception. I've come back to say thank you Lord.
And this is how the story goes...
Sometime late last year, I saw this opportunity. But I was in a restrained position and a place were I could not go for it. But I knew the time to spread out was soon. Then the opportunity to flap my wings, spread out and fly showed up on the 1st day of this year 2017. I took the chance and went for it, I plunged.
I entered for the International Women's Media Foundation competition for women journalists to carry out a project dear to my heart, I titled: GAINING GROUND!
Behold! After the rigorous process of application and defending my project at different stages, I got the elating news that I have been selected out of a group of 400 CANDIDATES from 85 COUNTRIES as an #iwmfgrantee of the Howard G. Buffet Fund for Women Journalists.
About the Project.
Gaining Ground is a one year reporting project that will focus on inheritance for women and girls in Nigeria. It will look at stories of women and girls who have tried to gain their inheritance after the demise of their husbands and fathers. It will X-ray the inheritance laws in Nigeria.
I will work across the 6 geo-political zones in Nigeria and will also mentor 6 FRCN producers in those zones. Gaining Ground will air on my station Kapital FM 92.9, Abuja and other FRCN Stations where we shall work, as well as other stations that are interested in the content. It will be a main feature on the #WHIZWOMAN podcast for the next one year.
I am excited about this opportunity to work with the International Woman's Media Foundation. I hope to use this as a medium to give voice to issues that women face in our society and to expand my reach as a #mediaentrepreneur, #producer #mediatrainer and a #mentor. Thanks friends and much love to my biggest encourager Faithful Ohiani. Work begins now.

So help me God.

It has been a long, often puzzling week here but hopefully it'll be an interesting programme with loads of twists and turns. Coming up soon on the World Service. #iwmffellows #iwmf #bbcworldservice #bbc #onassignment #ontheroad #work #travel #thepeopleyoumeet

mllenicolakelly's Instagram Photo - Khames has OCD and experiences frequent seizures - sometimes as many as 8 a day. His mum says he becomes very violent and believes he's possessed, so she keeps him locked up in a small room here, deep in the forest in the north of Zanzibar. This is the case for thousands of people suffering from mental health disorders, the topic for my next @bbcworldservice programme.

femme_perception's Instagram Photo - Amazing capture by@stephsinclairpix - Ritu Saini (foreground), 21, and Rupa, 23, enjoy monsoon rains on a roof in Agra, India. Both women are acid attack survivors. A disfiguring and sometimes deadly retributive act generally taken by, or on behalf of, men whose advances the women rejected, acid attacks disfigure hundreds of women and girls in India every year. Formerly a volleyball player, Ritu was attacked by her cousin. After several reconstructive surgeries, she lost her left eye. Rupa was attacked when she was 15. Ritu now spends her days educating people about acid attacks while working at Sheroes Hangout Cafe @sheroeshangout in Agra, India, which is staffed by acid attack survivors and supported by the group @StopAcidAttacks, which advocates for policies to help acid-attack survivors.

Today it was announced that I am the recipient of this year’s Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award, granted each year to a female photographer since Anja’s tragic death in Afghanistan in 2014 by the International Women's Media Foundation @theiwmf. It is a tremendous, if bittersweet, honor to win an award in Anja’s name. I’ve long been moved by IWMF’s mission to unleash the potential of women journalists as champions of press freedom to transform the global news media. Today, I feel this is needed more than ever. I am humbled and proud that the jury would recognize my photojournalism in this way and be one of the women journalists supported and empowered by this prestigious organization. Not only will this award support my continued work, but I am grateful for the awareness such a high profile honor will bring to the stories I shared in my application, including Ritu’s above, which was made on assignment last year for @natgeo. It is a privilege to share the stories of the women and girls who truly deserve an award for their courage.
