If you experience elbow pain that complicates your ability to assume a low-ish bar position on your back, the reason can be due to number of mobility or stability issues. If you're addressing your elbow pain by simply just stretching your elbow, you may be hurting more than helping.

Structurally, the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of the elbow helps resist excessive valgus (or inward-directed) motion when the elbow is in flexion. Cramming your elbow into deep flexion and then repeatedly putting heavy-ass weight on your back and shoulders IF you don’t have the prerequisites can strain the UCL or nearby structures.

If you can’t retract your shoulder blades far back enough, the weight of the bar may pull your shoulder into excessive external rotation and your elbow can poke forward, stressing the medial aspect of the elbow.

While having the passive flexibility to assume a low bar squat position is required, being able to actively assume this position and to strongly contract the muscles that contribute to stabilization is also crucial. Don’t settle for just relying on the weight of the bar to pull your arms into position--lock it all down by irradiating tension throughout your back, shoulders, scapulae, elbows and wrists.

Swipe left to view an FRC drill that can help work on the above. You’re essentially performing a maximal isometric contraction of the muscles involved with a low-bar position while extending your thoracic spine up against gravity--a passive end-range lift-off.

Just got this text from a former client, current friend who trained with me when I was the baseball strength and conditioning coach at Dunwoody HS in Georgia. He questioned, investigated, researched and most importantly trained and trained and trained some more to experience first hand principles of performance and healing. It's easy to try something "outside of the box" when you're already healthy and strong. But when you get sick, injured, diseased...who's baby your faith is tested. Here's his story: "I ended up making it through the indoctrination course for special operations for Pararescue and the Isometrics kept me totally injury free the entire time. Before and after pics from what happened on a run last week, haven't gotten an MRI yet but they think there is soft tissue tears. Long story short, I HAVEN'T TAKEN A SINGLE ANTI-INFLAMMATORY and only iced 4 times, 3-5 minutes each when my mom refused to leave me alone. Just knocked out a 4 minute wall sit and it's feeling amazing. Only been 5 DAYS!! Man I'm so thankful for this training, such a weapon for what I'll be going through over the next few years! All in the mind. The isometric training prepared my nervous system, mind and body in so many ways. Love it. It's also so amazing because even though my day to day training has changed and my craft is different, I can always fall back on the isos. Prepare the body to absorb force and you can do anything..run miles upon miles..swim mile after mile or whatever the heck makes you happy!"--Chandler Dinsmore Boom.
