alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - Time-lapse of an Antarctic descent with myself and my buddy @jamesfchyde at Vernadsky station, about 65 degrees south. The sea ice here had just broken up mere days before, the water was both incredibly clear and incredibly cold. My dive computer read 27 degrees, though 28 is more realistic. As we rolled back and headed down grease ice was forming on the surface! During this video check out how many times I have to add air to my drysuit, equalize my sinuses, check depth and air.. all to get to 60’. #yesitscolddownthere @fourthelementdive @natgeoexpeditions @scubapro

alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - Appreciate your legs, they have the ability to take you remarkable places, to show you remarkable things. Someday you will be old, if you’re lucky. When your legs are brittle and sore I hope you can look back on a life full of tested muscles and physical accomplishments. #treatyoself

alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - Happy Antarctica day! These are the peaks at Point Wild, Elephant Island. The Endurance expedition found refuge here after over a year trapped in the ice during their early 1900s mission. The men lived here for several months, overturning two of their three lifeboats to create a makeshift hut called “the snuggery”. Seeing Point Wild in all of its blustery strength, in the SUMMER, really makes you consider what life must be like to happily mark this spot as a refuge. People used to be so tough.. #thesnuggery

alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - Making friends in the subantarctic island of South Georgia.. these weeks old elephant seals have just been weaned from their mothers and are HUNGRY, totally benign, and investigating anything/anyone to feed them. As staff members if these snoog boogs approach us, we can allow it.. but not return attention, as we are truly interacting with wild animals. Here I am being my best IAATO rule follower and keeping my mitts to myself. Thank you James @jamesfchyde for the shot :) #butitwantedscratchies

alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - I still love sleep, no - I need sleep, which makes catching early morning serenity like this difficult. When I do snag a gorgeous sunrise, steaming coffee in hand and tired eyes coming to terms with leaving my bed, I try to take in the stillness, the cold morning air, the world waking up around me, and appreciate not talking myself into just five more minutes. #illonlysnoozeonce

alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - This morning I woke up at 5:30 to go on a run. To get to the trail, I disembarked the ship, boarded a small boat, then battled my way through tussac grass filled with hidden pinniped monsters voicing their discontent at my existence on their island. About halfway through my run I stopped in awe at being entirely, 100% alone on this island. At least a couple miles from anyone, hundreds of miles from the next land mass, nearer to Antarctica than anything else, and totally happy in my ephemeral solitude. Oh P.S. this is my front porch view #getoutside

alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - Last year Robert (@robertring) and I were out in search of penguin footage at Neko Harbour, in Antarctica, when our vessel was boarded without our consent by a curious and instantly regretful Gentoo. I found this on my computer labeled “AH! Penguin”. #penguinpirates

alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - When my grandfather was 19, he boarded a ship bound for Germany. Upon landing, he and his team liberated a major concentration camp, where as an American Jew he had the unique ability to understand the language of those behind bars. How must he have felt, on the other side of the fence and war from these people he could intimately understand? When I was 12 I read his 14 page letter detailing his experience and reaction, both emotional and physical, to this unimaginable situation. Now I work on beautiful ships, chasing tranquil interactions like we see here with this humpback whale.. today think about your personal transition from childhood to adulthood, and tomorrow thank a veteran.

alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - I often get to do amazing, extraordinary things for work.. but this was an amazing, super extraordinary opportunity in Alaska. One of the small Cessna’s that does glacial flyovers had an extra seat, which was offered to me. We flew past tall ridges close enough to see mountain goats hopping from ledge to ledge, the plane bumped as it found the density change in thermal lines. Usually I don’t like turbulence, but in a small plane it seems to be just a reminder that you’re riding air waves, it’s tangible and liberating. Here we crossed over the Le Conte glacier out of Petersburg. Check out how obvious glacial flow is from above versus looking at a glacial face - whether it ice, water, or air, it’s all flowing moving shifting changing.. I guess it’s always a search to find the nicest lines.

alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - This is my favorite dock to dive. There’s something beautiful about diving in the rain - and it’s not just ascending to see it from under the surface. Rain feels different in a drysuit, cozy and warm, knowing any part of your body that can get wet will soon be saturated. It’s a lovely thing to appreciate a kind of weather that is usually hated or avoided. I love rain, kelp forests, drysuit diving and cold water exploration.

alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - This week has been wild. I got to see my underwater footage produced in a film with @mikelibecki at the National Geographic HQ in D.C., flew straight to Baja for a shark conference with @mission_blue, and after a one day turnaround am now headed to Santiago, Chile and will continue south until things look as cold as they do in this photo. The runaround can be intense, but someone’s got to check if the world is round right? PS I’ll call this “Cold Robert” in the continuing series of @robertring being not warm. #isitcolddownthere

alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - Cooperative bubble net feeding by Humpback whales in SE Alaska. In this social practice, several animals work together to create a net of ascending bubbles, trapping small fish for the entire group to feast on. Happy Saturday, get up and do something amazing today! #alaska

alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - A post dedicated to shoulder season (😉), the in-between of Northern Hemisphere summer and Southern Hemisphere summer. I'm always chasing summer - but high latitude summer, the kind where clear sunny days are crisp and cold enough to see your breathe. During shoulder season I tend to sit on beaches, thaw out, play in my home woods and say goodbye to one hemisphere while I prepare to welcome the next. So goodbye to summer in the North, and Argentina - I'll see your fine wild waters soon. #foreversummer

alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - Ice! Ice in great quantities! Ice in great - but decreasing - quantities. Once you see ice in great quantities, you'll always yearn to see it again, in different shapes and sizes, bathing in cold air and cold oceans. It's kind of a weird thing, because if you don't know the feeling of seeing ICE you'd think.. but what the hell.. it's only ice? Soon I'll get to go to Antarctica, to see the most magnificent ice on Earth. This is in Alaska, the face of South Sawyer Glacier. #iceicebaby

alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - I got to spend some time with my best friend a couple nights ago, who left me with a thought I'll remember. She told me that there's a difference between knowing what's going to happen and knowing it's going to be fine. Time to take this little cutie out to play, let's see what kind of trouble we get into :) #thesnuggery

alyssamadler's Instagram Photo - What to do when your long lens doesn't exactly capture a humpback rubbing its rostrum on the bow? Get detail shots! This is the business end of a humpback whale - each tubercle hosts a single hair, used for sensory purposes. Great way to wake up, with a little bit of #whalebreath
