blkgrltrvlr's Instagram Photo - Fellow traveler, Erick Prince @minoritynomad discussing the question of why black people don’t travel more often. He handled it well, providing an excellent model for how to respond to difficult questions about race and travel. In the 2014 article “Mind the Gap: Exploring the African American Adventure Travel Market,” journalist and editor of "Go Girl: The Black Woman’s Book of Travel and Adventure," Elaine Lee, Esq. writes that "over the past 10-20 years this historical 'black travel' trend has changed steadily, as rapidly increasing numbers of African Americans embark on recreational, international, business and adventure travels… yet few articles, magazines, books and television shows currently feature African American adventure and international travelers." And this for me, and maybe for others as well, is a hugely important issue when considering and responding to questions concerning black travel—the issue of VISIBILITY. "There has always been a stereotype that people of color don't travel—or if they do, that they'll go to the Caribbean or Miami. But it wasn't that people of color weren't traveling, it was that mass media wasn't documenting it," said Evita Robinson, CEO and creator of travel community Nomadness Travel Tribe. In the 2015 Time Magazine article, "How Black Millennials Are Changing the Face of Travel," Salima Koroma affirms African-Americans are traveling now more than ever. "Do an Instagram search for the term 'black travelers.' Chances are, you’ll find a number of photos of young African Americans exploring the world. From Dubai to Santorini, Nice to Marrakech, and of course, from sea to shining sea, the visibility of black travel is growing." And that I think is a critical point to make when addressing questions such as these about black travel. blkgrltrvlr's Instagram Photo - Back when I started this account, one of my first posts was an image of “The Negro Traveler’s Green Book.” Published by a postal worker named Victor H. Green from 1936 until 1964, the Green Book provided African American travelers with a list of places where it was safe to stop and stay as they drove across the United States—places that offered amenities to satisfy their unique interests as well as their hope for decent and equitable treatment. Green optimistically wrote in one edition: “There will be a day sometime in the near future when this guide will not have to be published. That is when we as a race will have equal opportunities and privileges in the United States.” #NYTimes #FaraiChideya (⬅️ hashtag citations) Historically for African-Americans, domestic and international travel have been filled with significant dangers, complications, and roadblocks. Beginning with the treacherous “middle passage”, millions of enslaved Africans died while being transported to the Americas. During the period of slavery, blacks were not allowed to travel without a pass from their owners and if they tried to escape they were publicly tortured or maimed to serve as a warning to others who might flee. During emancipation in the 1860’s up until the 1960’s African Americans in the South were subjected to Jim Crow and apartheid laws, which prevented them from eating in restaurants, staying in motels, or using public bathrooms and water fountains deemed “whites only”—which made travel challenging to say the least. #AdventureTravelNews #ElaineLeeEsq This famous photograph by Horace Cort shows Monson Motor Lodge manager, James Brock pouring acid into the hotel swimming pool, shouting “I’m cleaning pool,” on June 18, 1964, in St. Augustine, Florida after a group of white and black integrationists entered the pool for a swim. #rarehistoricalphotos For more on this photograph, please use the following link: http://n.pr/2ySBAmv #swimin #civilrightsmovement #monsonmotorlodge #staugustinefl #blackhistory #americanhistory #racerelationsinamerica

blkgrltrvlr's Instagram Photo - 👩🏾🤳🏾 In ancient Rome and Greece, facilities for bathing were called "thermae" and "balneae" respectively. What's more, ancient bathhouses were not only centers for bathing but socializing. Thermal baths have some good health benefits too like improved circulation, stress reduction, pain relief and promoting a deeper and more relaxing sleep. After a long soak, it’s a good idea to replenish and rehydrate your body with a glass of cool water or nourishing organic juices that will boost your immune system. #ancientbaths #thermalspa #relaxation #architecture #tribeca #lowermanhattan #nyc

Katz's mouthwatering sandwiches are made fresh with hearty portions of meats like corn beef, pastrami, and beef brisket. The deli's meat cutters will even carve some samples for you to try before preparing your order. blkgrltrvlr's Instagram Photo - 🎃 This picture was taken in Salem, Massachusetts during my junior year of high school. Found it just in time for Halloween! Salem is probably best known for its witch trials, which took place in the early 1690s and claimed the lives of 20 people. The Salem Witch Trials have been the subject of many books and films, including Arthur Miller’s play, “The Crucible” and the Disney’s movie, Hocus Pocus. If you’re ever in town, consider visiting @salemwitchmuseum: https://www.salemwitchmuseum.com/education #juniortrip #throwback #blackgirlstravel #salem #massachussets #historicplaces #autumn #sightseeing

blkgrltrvlr's Instagram Photo - 💁🏾 Yay it's #ArchivesWeek (Oct. 18-25th)! As part of the effort to draw attention to the importance of preserving and making our documentary heritage accessible, I'd like to recommend visiting @museumofcityny's exhibit, "#BeyondSuffrage: A Century of NY Women in Politics." And to show my support, here's a photo of me speaking @centerforjewishhistory on black women and the right to vote. The objective of my presentation was to raise awareness about black women’s suffrage in the U.S. as well as the difficulties black women faced in actualizing and exercising their right to vote. Utilizing primary source documents from libraries and archives I wanted to validate black women suffrage in the U.S. and highlight important historical figures that served as “guiding spirits” in the struggle for universal suffrage, e.g. Sojourner Truth, Harriet Forten Purvis, Mary Ann Shadd Cary, Ida B. Wells Barnett, Mary Church Terrell, Amelia Boynton Robinson, Septima Clark and Shirley Chisholm. The idea for "Sister Suffragette" came to me after observing contrasting responses on Twitter to the anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in the U.S. While many traditionally white institutions celebrated the illustrious date as a symbol of American progress, I noticed that responses from black women expressed feelings of exclusion (e.g. Most Invisible of All: Black Women's Voluntary Associations: http://bit.ly/2l6YpfN). Also worth mentioning, this November will mark the 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote in New York State—three years before the 19th Amendment was ratified. #archivesweek #nyarchivesweek #womeninpolitics #areyouafeminist #throwback
