drsashashokrian's Instagram Photo - This weekend I️ had the privilege of attending a seminar with Jon Kabat-Zinn on the art of mindfulness. What I came to find is that no matter what the therapeutic approach, the message of leaning into your thoughts, feelings and emotions and cultivating a state of awarenesses for the self is what allows one the capacity to grow and evolve. So, only YOU can decide to live meaningfully. How can you approach one activity you do, with full presence? How can you consider yourself, your body, your breath, your heart in every moment of it? Life is full of moments, use some meaningfully/presently today.

drsashashokrian's Instagram Photo - For the past two years I have been working for the Wright Institute, a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles, that focuses on training future psychologists, while offering low fee therapy to the LA community on a sliding scale. What sets the Wright Institute apart is their tremendous efforts to not only offer affordable therapy to the community, but to develop the psychologist, the human that exists beneath the degree. For any of you who are in your own treatment, I can't tell you how instrumental this is to the relationship that exists between patient and therapist. As you prioritize your mental health, I ask that you to also consider who it is that you are in relationship with...How does the individual playing therapist/healer in the room have the ability to help you in the ways in which they do? 
WILA is one of the few training sites that makes it possible to give their trainees the level of in depth training that we receive, and this is only made possible because we trainees actually pay to train/work at WILA. Even with our tuition and the patient’s contributions to their treatment, further financial support is necessary in order to continue to provide BOTH high quality low-fee therapy and stellar, thoughtful and thought provoking, training.The growth promoting experiences that are available to our patients and trainees is only possible with financial assistance. It is essential for our patients and all trainees (and the larger psychology community) that the trainee group can be diverse and not be limited to those who can afford full tuition. Everyone benefits from a more diverse population.

drsashashokrian's Instagram Photo - The desire to rid oneself of pain or discomfort has been a striving goal for many, a goal that's been consistently reinforced by society with titles that read '3 simple ways to get rid of pain' or '7 strategies to get over emotional discomfort' -- but those emotions (yes, all of them) serve to be our navigating systems. Our emotional compass, allowing us not only to understand our relationship with ourselves, but with the world. 
A recent article by @lilamaclellan describes the importance of developing an acceptance towards these darker emotions. She describes the key of psychological HEALTH as being, ones capacity to stay in touch with their internal experiences--however difficult they may be. (Link in bio)

She also references Guest House by Rumi, who (of course) illustrates it quite perfectly below: 
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

In my life, there's always been a connection between risk and luck. A lot of people approach risk as if it's the enemy, when it is really fortune's accomplice. A risk you take may seem ridiculous to other people, but risk isn't random or rash when it's a necessity." (Think outside the box)
