natgeo's Instagram Photo - snow tracking mountain lion, utah
Residential and commercial development is reducing mountain lion distribution through habitat alteration and destruction, particularly along the western border of the Wasatch Mountains in northern and central Utah. It is in these mountains that the first work with mountain lion in Utah was conducted by houndsman and district Predatory Animal and Rodent Control agent, Edward Connolly, who used snow tracking to evaluate predation rates and prey selection.
The advent of radio-telemetry in the 1960’s allowed us to have a much more detailed view of mountain lion behaviour. As a predator of mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, and livestock, many hunters and farmers consider them to be a pest. However, when prey survival is not a concern, they are considered as a trophy game species. Under both conditions, the ability to estimate and track changes in local populations is now more than ever crucial to the survival of the species. To see more of my personal work and projects follow me @chancellordavid and @natgeo

A blizzard in the Eastern Aleutian Islands, Alaska yesterday produced winds gusting around 80 mph. It was the wrong day to forget your mobile phone in the driveway:) Storms often ravage these islands, sometimes reaching hurricane force, but extreme weather is common and rarely make the news beyond Dutch Harbor.
I'm photographing life on land and sea in the Aleutians over the next month or so. Follow along here and @arni_coraldo

I love the birch forest growing along the Scandinavian treeline as it changes it's face rapidly in the dramatic winter weather. Snow can come from all directions, one day falling lightly like white feathers from the sky, the next hitting your face like small needles in wild winds traveling parallel to the ground. Sometimes the snow lays like a thick carpet on the branches of the trees or covers the upright stems, creating a ghost forest. Occasionally it rains too, which then freezes immediately in close-to-zero temperatures, and the tinkling sound of the crackling ice suddenly fills the seemingly dead forest with life. These scenes and sounds surrounded me every morning and evening earlier this winter, while passing the forest on my way up to the mountains of the Swedish Sarek National Park, photographing reindeer and ptarmigan. Our longterm project in this area will soon come to an end—this trip was one of the last ones photographing for our upcoming book about the Laponia World Heritage Site that will be published in the autumn. Follow @haarbergphoto to see more photographs from this trip and following ones and don't miss our updates about the book that we will start posting later this year.

Strolling along the promenade allows you to have a clear view of the Pudong Skyline. You can see people doing different activities like kite flying and tai chi practicing. Most of the kite flyers are local retirees or young kids. They fly kites for fun as well as for the purpose walking and exercise. They bring their own hand made kites which are various in type. The most common are bird-like and classical diamond, but you can often see more unique and creative shapes of kites. #shanghai #bund #pudong #kite #kites #china #promenade

Life thrives within the kelp forest on Cortes Banks, located approximately 100-miles off the coast of San Diego, California.

Cortes Banks is an underwater mountain range, rich with nutrients, that has yielded a unique habitat of kelp forest and surf grass on the seafloor, and has enabled a variety of pelagic marine life to thrive in the waters above. Places such as Cortes Banks are vital to the health of our planet, processing carbon and giving back oxygen. Diving in places like this is like swimming through a kaleidoscope, with color and light constantly changing.
Scientists state that, in order to have a healthy planet, we must protect at least 40% of Earth’s oceans. Currently only about 3% is protected.
Coverage from a story in the February issue of National Geographic Magazine (@natgeo) about the value of protecting ecosystems in US waters. To lean more about creating ‘Blue Parks,’ check out the February issue of @NatGeo Magazine and to see more photos of special underwater places, follow @BrianSkerry on Instagram.

natgeo's Instagram Photo - Photo @andy_mann // Marine biologist and free diver, @cainedelacy, sets up a shot on a large, pregnant Oceanic Whitetip Shark, assessed as critically endangered in the Western Central Atlantic due to enormous declines in their population. Some studies show a decline of over 99% in the last 30 years. For three years I've been working in the Bahamas with great organizations and biologists to tag and track pregnant female Whitetips in hopes of learning where this evasive, pelagic shark goes to give birth. It is an absolute honor to be in the water with this amazing shark.

natgeo's Instagram Photo - Photo by @renan_ozturk // This man, Winfred Rembert, was violently attacked and hung by a rope in the 1960's, one of the only currently living survivors of a lynching in America. 4,000 African Americans were killed in similar acts of racial terrorism during that era after the emancipation of slavery and through Jim Crow. ~

Counterintuitively, he is not the hardened man he looks in this picture. At his core he full of forgiveness, sharing his story through his hand nailed leather murals. ~ "There ain't a person in the world who has reason more than I do to hate. I got a reason to hate. But guess what... there ain't a prejudice bone in my body. I wanna live, and I wanna let live." -Winfred Rembert ~

Part of the #AshesToAshesFilm project that @taylorfreesolo, her father @todd.rees and myself have been directing and producing this past year. The film is about Winfred and Dr. Shirley Jackson Whitaker, two individuals deeply affected by racism in America that are using art to heal.

A female leatherback turtle crawls back to the sea after nesting - under the Caribbean moonlight - on the island of St. Croix. Researchers are uncertain as to exactly how old leatherbacks must be in order to begin mating, though most estimates state that the turtles must be between 20 and 30 years old.
The female crawls ashore typically after dark, digs her nest and lays a clutch of eggs. This picture was made at 2am, with a long exposure under a nearly full moon.

Leatherbacks are the largest, widest-ranging and deepest diving of all sea turtle species. Their lineage dates back more than 100 million years.

natgeo's Instagram Photo - Photograph by @paulnicklen // Happy #penguinawarenessday. At up four feet in height, emperor penguins stand tall as they prepare to enter the cold 28F Ross Sea. They will be at sea for up to two weeks as they gorge on krill and ice-fish of which they will bring back to their hungry chicks. A bit ungainly on land, these gigantic birds are true athletes once in the water. #followme on @paulnicklen to see how they release millions of bubbles from their feathers to accelerate underwater. #penguin #nature #naturelovers #rosssea #MPA #instagood #love #beauty #happyfeet

natgeo's Instagram Photo - Photo by @petekmuller. Two rising sophomores from Saint Benedict's Prep School rest in the grass during school's annual wilderness expedition. Each year, as an enshrined rite of passage, the outgoing freshman class must complete a grueling five-day, 55-mile hike along the Appalachian Trail. “The experience teaches kids to help one another,” explains Edwin Leahy, the school’s headmaster. “It creates a sense of community that is frequently not taught to young men. It’s this rugged individualism that gets communicated.” The all boys’ prep school in Newark, New Jersey aims to impart an emotionally aware and expressive form of masculine identity. “If young guys don’t find constructive means of expression, their anger either gets expressed outwardly in poor behavior or inward as self destruction,” Leahy adds. #boyhood #gender #masculinity #hiking #appalachiantrail #SBP #saintbenedicts #newjersey #newark
