natgeo's Instagram Photo - Photo by @CristinaMittermeier // As the sun sets over the calm waters of the Antarctic Peninsula, a young leopard seal rests on a whimsical piece of ice. Corroded by currents and waves, small icebergs like this one, serve as perches for wildlife, including penguins, seals and seabirds who often use them to rest. Without ice, life in the polar regions would be impossible. natgeo's Instagram Photo - Photo by @FransLanting Today we’re celebrating trees—it’s Arbor Day. I spent weeks inside Borneo’s tropical rain forest on assignment for @NatGeo to document its intricate natural history. One morning I took a helicopter up for an aerial perspective. When we rose above the canopy, my view expanded from single trees to the forest as a whole. I saw morning mist wafting through the treetops and envisioned the collective exhalation of these trees as the breath of a living planet. Trees are responsible for the air we breathe—what they exhale, we inhale. We are linked together in the cycle of life. Follow me @FransLanting for more images of our our amazing earth.

On Arbor Day we need to celebrate the amazing mangrove tree, which prevents the salinization and erosion of coastal soils, creates wildlife habitat, and acts as a barrier for storm surges – among its many attributes. Unfortunately the world has lost more than 50% of its original mangrove forests, due to coastal development, shrimp aquaculture, and charcoal production. These trees are on the forefront of mitigating climate change, so if you are inclined to plant a tree for Arbor Day – this would be a good one to choose. Happy Arbor Day!

It is National Arbor Day!!! This annual tree planting holiday is all about celebrating trees!!!
Trees help clean pollutants in the air, pull carbon from the atmosphere slowing climate change, keep our rivers and streams clean. Provide 50% of the oxygen we need to breathe and grasslands and forests
provide us with 75% of fresh water!!

natgeo's Instagram Photo - Video by @joelsartore | A blue-throated macaw at the @HoustonZoo.
The population of this species has been gravely harmed by the pet trade. Today there are fewer than 200 of these birds left in the wild, all in Bolivia. There are perhaps 1,000 individuals left in human care. This bird nests in swamp forest habitats and is considered critically endangered.

natgeo's Instagram Photo - Video by @bertiegregory for my wildlife adventure YouTube series for Nat Geo. See link in my personal bio to watch. A black bear catches a male chum salmon in a small river on the coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia Canada. After navigating 100s if not 1000s of miles of open ocean dodging orca, seals and sea lions to the exact the river in which it was born, this salmon then had to fight the flow of water up rapids and waterfalls. Even after achieving all of that, it fell short of its target as a rest in a little side pool proved fatal. What’s even more frustrating for this salmon is that it’s in great condition and about half a second into this video you can see the pressure applied by the bear causes sperm to fly out showing it was ready to breed. An amazing scene to witness but you’ve got to feel sorry for the salmon! Follow @bertiegregory for more wildlife adventures.

natgeo's Instagram Photo - Photo by @daviddoubilet // Table corals compete for space on Sno Reef on the Great Barrier Reef. This is a picture of a healthy robust Great Barrier Reef but today the worlds largest coral reef is literally in hot water and struggling to survive. Rising temperatures are causing coral bleaching, a process that occurs when thermal stress causes the coral polyp to lose its algae that provides its color and supplemental nutrients. Sequential back to back bleaching events in 2016 and 2017 have affected nearly 900 miles of the reef giving the reef little time to recover. Photographed on assignment for @natgeo // @natgeocreative // @thephotosociety . #ocean #greatbarrierreef #australia #moreocean . On Arbor Day we need to recognize the important role that trees play keeping our planet healthy. During one year, a mature tree will absorb more than 48 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen in exchange. In this era of human induced climate change we need them more than ever.

natgeo's Instagram Photo - Photo by @argonautphoto (Aaron Huey). A #Leopard tries dragging an Impala higher up her tree as another Leopard approaches below. #MoremiGameReserve, #Botswana. The red light is used because it causes much less stress than a white spot light. She was later able to get the Impala to a higher branch but almost dropped it on this attempt! Can you imagine carrying something close to your own weight by your teeth while climbing a tree!?

natgeo's Instagram Photo - Image by @joelsartore | A critically endangered red ruffed lemur at the @millerparkzoo. These lemurs are very clean and spend a large amount of time grooming themselves with their specialized incisor teeth, hind claws, and tongues- which are colored black. They live in matriarchal groups and forage for food together during the abundant wet season. Unlike most lemurs, red ruffed lemurs will often divide and find food on their own during the dry season.
Red ruffed lemurs live in a very small range in the forests of northern Madagascar and are threatened by the huge surge of illegal rosewood logging that began after an undemocratic change in political power in the area in 2009. These lemurs are also threatened by hunting, burning of habitat, the illegal pet trade, and frequent cyclones.

As a photographer one of the things I practice is noticing small things, details. Occasionally it pays off in unexpected ways and I sometimes see the strangest things. I often photograph red efts that I see in the forest. They are the juvenile form of the Eastern newt (Notophthalmus viridescens). But I had never seen this before. A bright green caterpillar crossing the newt like a bridge. Funniest thing was that the newt waited  patiently for the insect to cross before moving on. There is a whole wild world on the forest floor. #forestunseen #home #redeft
