natgeotravel's Instagram Photo - Video by @BertieGregory. A flamingo takes flight to spend the day feeding in the north of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Thanks to these charismatic birds, a reserve was setup which now not only protects the flamingoes but a huge diversity of other species in this coastal area. This is a great example of using a charismatic species to save the entire food chain in an area. This was filmed from a blind with special permission from the reserve authorities. Shot for @stevewinterphoto and @natgeo. Follow @bertiegregory to see a drone aerial of the whole flamboyance!

natgeotravel's Instagram Photo - 📸 @johnkernickphotography beach chairs and umbrellas cover the beach in Positano on Italy's Amalfi coast. It's a busy town and very popular with tourists durning the summer months. For a time during the early twentieth century Positano was a relatively poor fishing village. It began to attract large numbers of tourists in the 1950s, partly due to John Steinbeck publishing his essay about Positano in Harper's Bazaar in May, 1953: "Positano bites deep", Steinbeck wrote. "It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.

natgeotravel's Instagram Photo - Photo: @ChrisBurkard Alaska has always captured my attention due to the extremities of its landscapes. The string of the Aleutians islands is located in one of the world’s most dramatic volcanic regions, the Ring of Fire. This peninsula houses 29 active volcanoes, ancient villages, and some of the best fishing opportunities. These islands are home to around 8,000 natives. If you find yourselves out here and are daring enough, take a jump in the ocean, watch the waves, or take a boat trip around the strand of volcanoes.

natgeotravel's Instagram Photo - A Buddhist monk enters the formidable doors of Trongsa Dzong, the ancestral home of Bhutan's monarchy. The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan has sat in isolation for thousands of years and only recently been thrust into the glare of modern times after centuries of solitude. This Buddhist kingdom, high in the Himalayas, had no paved roads until the 1960s, was off-limits to foreigners until 1974, and launched television only in 1999.  In 1972, the country stop relying on Gross Domestic Product as the best indicator of Bhutan’s progress in favor of “Gross National Happiness.” So if you want to visit the happiest place on earth, put Bhutan on your travel bucket list.
.
Bhutan has put environmental conservation at the heart of its political agenda. It’s pledged to remain carbon neutral, made it law that 60% of the country must remain forested for future generations, banned plastic bags, instituted a monthly pedestrian day that bans all private vehicles from its roads, and  announced its intention to become the world’s first 100-percent organic-farming nation. The World at Night project
Clouds dissipate into a starry night of Kilimanjaro. Earlier this month I posted a still photo of this scene and here it is in timelapse motion. The southern Milky Way, Carina Nebula, and the Large Magellanic Cloud (a neighboring galaxy) appear above the Roof of Africa. These gems of the southern sky are easily visible to unaided eyes in a dark sky.

Land of the midnight sun. At 12:38AM the sun slowly skims across the horizon only to climb again to mark the beginning of a new and endless day at 73 degrees North in the far Canadian Arctic. Since growing up in the Arctic as a young kid, this world of ice, snow, vast vistas, aurora borealis and the nomadic existence of great species like polar bears has lived deep in my veins. When I am in the polar regions I am home. I have seen this place I love change over the past 25 years. #followme on @paulnicklen to learn more. #arctic #climatechangeisreal #nature #naturelovers #sunset #instagood

natgeotravel's Instagram Photo - Photo by @jeffmauritzen / Words by Justin Kavanagh. // Glendalough is one of Ireland’s great monastic sites, where St. Kevin became abbot in 570 A.D. Kevin actually went deep into Wicklow to live as a hermit, but his followers did what followers do. Here and at other sites like the Skellig Islands, the Irish “saved civilization” (according to Thomas Cahill’s famous bestseller) by transcribing the scriptures into words and illustration, while the forces of darkness threatened to overrun Europe.
The 110-feet (33 m) high round tower, built in the 10th century, allowed the monks excellent lookout views and the stairless door some 12 feet (3.5 m) above the ground meant they could beat a retreat heavenward whenever Vikings invaded.
After Kevin’s death, such disciples sought holiness in the acquisition of relics. In our modern, secular world, this practice is echoed in the bidding for sports stars’ uniforms in online auctions and in the collecting of celebrity memorabilia. If you'd like to hear more stories from our assignment updating the 5th edition of the #NatGeoTravel guidebook, please follow @jeffmauritzen.

natgeotravel's Instagram Photo - Photo: @andy_mann // Northern Lights performing their cosmic art under a Greenland sky a few evenings ago. I spent this night bivied on the roof of our small boat as the 7 of our crew along with 38 overpacked expedition bags fought for space on the cramped 20 foot Viknes which was giving us a lift back to the airfield at Kulusuk. natgeotravel's Instagram Photo - Video by @bertiegregory. A 15,000 strong flamboyance (actual technical term!) of flamingoes on the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Thanks to these charismatic birds, a reserve was setup which now not only protects the flamingoes but a huge diversity of other species in this coastal area. This is a great example of using a charismatic species to save the entire food chain in an area. This was filmed with special permission from the reserve authorities and we were under constant supervision from the amazing flamingo experts that monitor this colony. Shot for @stevewinterphoto and @natgeo. Follow @bertiegregory to see a closeup takeoff!

An unknown climber begins his rappel atop the 'Svolværgeita'. A 500 foot tall granite pinnacle on the southwest face of Fløyfjellet in the Lofoten Archipelago. A popular climb in the region that was first summited in the early 1900's. The route got its name 'The Goat' because of its two adjacent horns.

A futuristic view in the Middle East, with this single telephoto exposure of the new moon at dusk. Tehran is the most populous city in Western Asia with 15 million people in its metropolitan area. While the ancient Rey in the southern end dates back to 6000 BCE, the elevated northern end reaching the Alborz Mountains is mainly modern constructions including the 435-meter Milad communication tower which has an excellent viewing platform to the city when the air is not too polluted.
