natgeotravel's Instagram Photo - photo by @andrea_frazzetta // Rwanda. A picture of Muhoza, a Silverback Gorilla living in the forest of the Volcanoes National Park.
There are only several hundred mountain gorillas remaining on Earth, and about half live in the forests of the Virunga mountains in central Africa.
Gorillas can climb trees but are usually found on the ground in communities of up to 30 individuals. These troops are organized according to fascinating social structures. Troops are led by one dominant, older adult male, often called a silverback because of the swath of silver hair that adorns his otherwise dark fur. A gorilla group is named after the Silverback leading the family. Each gorilla group has distinct and unique characteristic quiet different from another. The animals are peaceful, gentle, social, and mainly vegetarian creatures.
Many conservation initiatives are meant to aid mountain gorillas, and it is believed that their numbers may be steady or slowly increasing. Still, they continue to face major threats from habitat loss and poaching.

natgeotravel's Instagram Photo - Photo by @amivitale. Yusuf sleeps with young black rhinos at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (@lewa_wildlife). This was my first glimpse into the unwavering commitment of these keepers and the sacrifices they make to protect endangered animals. The calf he rested his head on was orphaned when poachers killed his mother and the calf was immediately moved to Lewa, about 50 miles away. Much needed attention has been focused on the plight of wildlife and the conflict between heavily armed poachers and increasingly militarized wildlife rangers. But very little has been said about the indigenous communities on the front lines of the poaching wars and the incredible work they do to protect these animals. They hold the key to saving Africa’s great animals.

I'm Ami Vitale (@amivitale) and I've spent the past 8 years discovering and documenting unique conservation efforts in northern Kenya that protect wildlife, people, and cultures alike. You can read my latest @NatGeo article: http://tinyurl.com/kvopc69 to learn about the first community owned elephant and rhino sanctuary in East Africa (@r.e.s.c.u.e)

A winter night in a traditional Sami village near Kiruna in Swedish Lapland. Aurora is a master artist of nature with its ever changing forms and colors painted by these dancing lights in polar areas. Seeing these patterns it becomes easier to understand why some cultures called them the dancing spirits and departed souls (as Sami people called them). Wonder where and when to see the lights, see my @natgeo web article “7 Magical Places to View Auroras”. Google aurora natgeo. Follow me @babaktafreshi to explore more of the world at night.

natgeotravel's Instagram Photo - Photograph by @paulnicklen // During a blizzard on Svalbard, Norway a mother polar bear plays with her young 4 month old cub while a fulmar flies overhead. We spent many hours with this female bear and her two cubs. She was patient, nurturing and a great teacher. She was also a great hunter as we watched her casually catch two ringed seals on the open sea ice. With their bellies full of seal meat, they had time to wrestle and play Queen of the castle. #followme on @paulnicklen to see more polar bears. #polarbear #love #family #climatechangeisreal #baby #instagood #honorparis

There is very little flora here in the vast Namib desert so these guys take advantage of it when they can. They are found throughout arid regions of Southern Africa and also happen to be the national animal of Namibia. natgeotravel's Instagram Photo - 📷: @krystlejwright // The Moroccan town of Merzouga is often known as the gateway to Erg Chebbi, a huge expanse of sand dunes north of town. There is an old legend to how the dunes came to be; When a wealthy family refused hospitality to a poor woman and her son, God was offended, and buried them under the mounds of sand called Erg Chebbi. Folk tales or not, there is no denying the majestic appearance of the dunes rising above Merzouga. The landscape is spectacular as tourists flock here especially in the winter to experience a slice of the Sahara. #morocco #sahara #travel

natgeotravel's Instagram Photo - Photograph by @paulnicklen // How much life can you fit on one beach? St Andrews Bay, Antarctica has perhaps the highest bio-density of life on Earth. Over 10,000 elephant seals and over 300,000 king penguins make it very challenging to walk anywhere on this beach. The first time I came here with @natgeoexpedtions I just stood in awe and disbelief for an hour before shooting 3500 images. And that was before lunch. Most of the penguins are up the valley to the right but many of them cross this beach daily to go to sea and feed. Running a gauntlet of grumpy elephant seals is one crazy communte for these penguins. #followme on @paulnicklen to see more from this gorgeous corner of the globe. #myfavoriteplaceonearth #nature #naturelovers #antarctica #instagood #photography

Some night scenes are very abstract to the eyes and it becomes more mysterious and colorful to the camera. Here at 10,000 ft high on the top of Halaekala Crater on Maui, Hawaii, I was watching a face in the clouds (top center, looking upward) as it formed under the four brighter stars of the Dragon head (constellation Draco). The lower clouds are lit by yellow sodium streetlights. I have photographed many “faces” at night. These are good examples of Pareidolia when our brain detect faces even in irrelevant contexts. Neuroscience can explain it today.
