thisdayinhoops's Instagram Photo - July 27, 1993 - Reggie Lewis suffered sudden cardiac death on the basketball court at an off-season practice at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He was only 27 years old. Lewis had shown symptoms of heart problems in the preceding months (including collapsing during the opening game of their first-round playoff series with the Charlotte Hornets), and the cause of his death was subsequently attributed to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a structural heart defect that is considered the most common cause of death in young athletes. On March 22, 1995 the Boston Celtics retired Lewis' jersey. Lewis had worn the number 35 for his entire career. During the ceremony, former teammate Dee Brown made a speech (pictured above) while two other former teammates, Sherman Douglas and Xavier McDaniel, held up Lewis' framed jersey.

thisdayinhoops's Instagram Photo - July 27, 1986 - DeMarre Carroll was born in Birmingham, Alabama. Happy 31st Birthday DeMarre Carroll! A former standout at John Carroll Catholic High School in Birmingham, he teamed with Alabama point guard Ronald Steele to lead the Cavaliers to back-to-back Alabama Class 6A state titles. He earned first team All-State, All-Area, All-Region, All-District and All-Metro recognition as a junior and senior and helped JCCHS to a combined 67-3 mark his final two seasons, culminating in those consecutive state crowns. He averaged 17.8 points and 9.1 rebounds as a junior for John Carroll's undefeated 36-0 state championship squad, before recording averages of 19.7 points and 10.7 rebounds as a senior en route to the team's 31-3 championship season. He capped his prep career by scoring a game-high 27 points in the annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game and was named MVP of the 2004 Alabama Class 6A State Tournament. Considered a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, Carroll was listed as the No. 40 small forward and the No. 148 player in the nation in 2004. After a successful sophomore year at Vanderbilt, he surprised the team when he decided to transfer to Missouri in 2006 to play for his uncle Mike Anderson. Carroll led Missouri to the Elite Eight (national quarterfinals) of the 2009 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament during his senior year. He was nicknamed the "Junkyard Dog" because of his toughness and relentless play. Carroll was drafted in the first round, 27th overall, by the Memphis Grizzlies.

His college career featured double-digit scoring averages as a sophomore and junior, pouring in 16.4 points per game in his final year with the Utes, while pulling down 9.3 rebounds and handing out 2.4 assists a contest. For his efforts, he was recognized with 2017 All-Pac-12 First Team honors. After the conclusion of the 2016–17 campaign, Kuzma announced to forgo his senior year to enter the 2017 NBA draft. On June 22, 2017, Kuzma was selected with the 27th overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft by the Brooklyn Nets. On June 22, 2017, Kuzma was traded, along with Brook Lopez, to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for D'Angelo Russell and Timofey Mozgov. thisdayinhoops's Instagram Photo - July 24, 1976 - Rafer Alston was born in New York, New York. Happy 41st Birthday Rafer Alston! Alston struggled early in his NBA career, but successfully transitioned from streetball to the professional game. After playing off the bench for most of the time he was with the Milwaukee Bucks, he was traded to the Toronto Raptors. Following his tenure with the Raptors, he emerged as a starter for the Miami Heat in 2004. He did not disappoint, averaging 12 points and 4 assists on a young Miami team, led by rookie guard Dwyane Wade, that made it to the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals of the NBA Playoffs. During that season, in a March 26 game against the Dallas Mavericks, he hit a game-winning shot in overtime with 0.5 seconds left over the outstretched arms of Shawn Bradley to catapult Miami to a 119-118 victory. Alston would sign a multi-year deal with the Toronto Raptors in the summer of 2004. For Alston this was his first step in the new phase of a secure NBA career which had eluded him until that point.

thisdayinhoops's Instagram Photo - July 24, 1969 - Rick Fox was born in Toronto, Ontario. Happy 48th Birthday Rick Fox! Fox was born in Toronto, the son of Dianne Gerace, who was an Olympic high jumper and women's pentathlete, and Ulrich Fox. His father is Bahamian and his mother is of Italian and Scottish descent. Fox's family moved to his father's native Bahamas when Fox was young. He attended Kingsway Academy in Nassau, where he was a member of the high school's basketball team, the "Saints." Fox also played high school basketball in Warsaw, Indiana. After two seasons (1984–1986) at Warsaw, Fox was projected to have a very successful senior season. Just prior to his senior season, the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) ruled that he had no more high school eligibility left (due to completing eight semesters between the Bahamas and Indiana) and was not allowed to participate in any IHSAA games. Despite not playing his senior season, Fox was voted onto the Indiana All-Star team in 1987. He then went on to star collegiately at the University of North Carolina where his highlights included leading the Tar Heels to the 1991 NCAA Final Four. Fox began his pro basketball career when he was selected by the Boston Celtics in the first round (24th pick overall) of the 1991 NBA draft.

Malone was a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, a 14-time NBA All-Star, and an 11-time member of the All-NBA first team. thisdayinhoops's Instagram Photo - July 24, 1939 - Walt Bellamy (#8) was born in New Bern, North Carolina. Bellamy had a stellar 14-year career in the NBA, and was the NBA first overall draft pick in 1961. Bellamy was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1962 after having arguably one of the three greatest rookie seasons in NBA history (along with Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson). His 31.6 points per game average that season is second all-time for a rookie to Wilt Chamberlain's 37.6, and the 19 rebounds per game he averaged that season is third best all-time for a rookie (to Chamberlain's 27 and Bill Russell's 19.6). Bellamy also led the NBA in field goal percentage in his rookie season, and had a 23-point, 17-rebound performance in the 1962 NBA All-Star Game. Bellamy played with the Chicago Packers, which became the Baltimore Bullets, for his first four seasons before he was traded to the New York Knicks for Johnny Green, Johnny Egan, Jim Barnes, and cash a few games into the 1965–66 season. Due to trades to teams with offset game schedules during the 1968–69 season when he was traded (with Howard Komives) from the Knicks to the Detroit Pistons for Dave DeBusschere, Bellamy set a still-standing record for NBA games played in a single season with 88 (He played 35 games with the Knicks, 53 with the Pistons). He later played for several seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, and finished his career with the New Orleans Jazz. Bellamy ended his NBA career with 20,941 points and 14,241 rebounds, and is a two-time Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, being inducted in 1993 for his individual career, and in 2010 as a member of the 1960 United States men's Olympic basketball team. Despite being one of the league's top rebounders, Bellamy never made an All-NBA team.
