twitine_bandim's Instagram Photo - @Regranned from @natgeo - Photo by Stephanie Sinclair @stephsinclairpix @tooyoungtowed // Sisters Yagana, 21, Yakaka, 19, and Falimata, 14, were all abducted and held captive by Boko Haram until their escape. “After invading Bama, the Boko Haram insurgents came to my house, one of them saw me and said, ‘I want to marry you,’” Yakaka told me a year ago. "I said, ‘My parents will not give me to you. Then he said, ‘O.K., that is easy. Let me kill them, so that you will now be the one to decide.’ We got married in the Sambisa forest. Three months later, my husband was killed. I was pregnant by that point.” When Boko Haram abducted 276 Chibok schoolgirls from their dormitory in 2014, the world took notice as #BringBackOurGirls filled our social media feeds. However, nearly four years later it’s now becoming apparent that the Chibok abductions were just one instance of a profoundly disturbing tactic: child marriage used as a weapon of war -- a practice that has led to the kidnapping of thousands of girls in the region. ---------------------------

twitine_bandim's Instagram Photo - @Regranned from @natgeo - Video by @ciriljazbec / This breathtaking sight revealed to us on our way to Aappilattoq, a small settlement in the northwest Greenland. I was traveling with Niels, a local fisherman and hunter. He told me life had become much harder due to climate change with fishing and hunting forming the foundation of the Inuit world. The Greenland’s massive ice sheet, almost two miles deep in some places, has been melting faster than at any time during the past 50 years.

twitine_bandim's Instagram Photo - @Regranned from @natgeo - photo by @chamiltonjames / Charlie Hamilton James - Awã children watch their friend as he climbs a palm tree to harvest wild açaí berries. The Awã are expert hunters and gathers in the forest and during my time with them over the last couple of weeks i’ve been amazed by their incredible resourcefulness - they seem to be able to find food anywhere and have beautiful ways of using the forest to collect it. To gather the açaí berries one of the older boys stripped a palm frond, wound it round and around to make a rope, then he tied it into a bow and gave it to a younger boy, who wrapped it around his feet and used it to scale the branchless trunk of the palm. Of course finding food to survive in the forest relies on actually having forest. The Awã still have a small pocket of intact land but much of their historic range has now been logged and the forest gone forever. On assignment in Brazil for @natgeo - #regrann

twitine_bandim's Instagram Photo - @Regranned from @natgeo - Photo by @CristinaMittermeier // Violations to the environment oftentimes are also violations to indigenous rights and ultimately to human rights. When it comes to standing up for what is right and proper in our relationship with nature, we have no better allies than First Nations, especially in British Columbia. As we begin documenting the devastating effects that Atlantic salmon fish farms are having on marine ecosystems in Canada, I delight in my new friendship with young leaders like @Tlalitlas_08, a young woman from the #Mugsgamaw Dzawada'enuwx First Nation, who has been occupying fish farms owned by #MarineHarvest for 75 days. These farms have been operating in tribal terrotory without consent from her people for over 30 years and they want fish farms out, so that the wild fish they depend on might return. To see and understand why she is taking on this fight, please #follow my #instagram feed at @CristinaMittermeier.

In general, the country of Vietnam is seen as a success story as far as open defecation is concerned. The government has enforced the use of toilets and proper sanitation in the past 10 years, improving the health of its citizens. Here, a woman in Dien Bien works in rice patties in an area that no longer has open defecation. Shot for the August issue of National Geographic, “A Place to Go." #vietnam #sanitation @noorimages - #regrann

twitine_bandim's Instagram Photo - @Regranned from @natgeo - Photo @ladzinski / Bordering Bolivia and Chile, the volcano know as #Licancabur is a holy mountain to the people of the #Atacama. Standing tall at 19,400ft, this volcano is a picturesque icon of the desert hovering over the #atacamaSaltFlats. This mountain was at one time forbidden to climb by the locals, saying that it would bring misfortune and that the mountain would punish those who attempted it. Mixing it up here with an in-camera #doubleExposure of the volcano and atacama salt flats. To see more photos from this beautiful part of the world please visit @ladzinski - #regrann

twitine_bandim's Instagram Photo - @Regranned from @natgeo - Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) - The beauty of Imawari Yueta (cave) on top of Auyán Tepui in Venezuela is evident throughout its many passageways carved in the quartzite rock. However, what makes it so unique are the remarkable columns found in '1000 Column Gallery’. This photograph is from a portfolio I made from inside caves on top of extremely remote tepuis (aka table-top mountains) in Venezuela. The scientists from the Italian geographic exploration group known as ‘La Venta’ and the Venezuelan team ‘Theraposa’ were looking for unique forms of bacteria that could help clinical microbiologists in studies into bacterial resistance to antibiotics. It was a fascinating assignment to a very remote and rarely visited part of our world. The diverse environment on top of these tepuis is like no other anywhere on planet Earth, as each tepui is different and home to a unique world. @natgeocreative - #regrann
